You know those photos that you take at a wedding and then use online all.the.time as if you’re all glammed up everyday? Yeah that’s one of those. In reality I wear far less makeup and hear way more “you look tired” comments despite getting 7 hours of sleep. So forgive me. I’m Tiina (the girl), and that’s not what I look like on a day to day basis. Although the dude on my right (your left) pretty much looks the same minus the tie- he’s my husband , Danny.
Danny and I bought a pre-war apartment in Brooklyn NY at the tail end of 2016. We’re first time home owners and home renovators. We really have no idea what we’ve gotten ourselves into. It’s a lot like being a contestant on The Bachelor to be honest. I mean I had NO idea my boyfriend would be dating so many other woman at the same time even though that’s the premise of the damned show. So yeah, renovation is full of all kinds of hiccups and “unplanned expenditures”- each one greeted with the same dumbfounded-ness you’d expect from someone who didn’t spend all last weekend watching HGTV streaming online from their parents cable account in Florida (hi mom, dad, & xfinity!).
So to commemorate this craziness I decided to chronicle the whole damn thing on a blog. Hopefully it won’t serve as a cautionary tale to others that take on the process and more of an enlightening journey of just how easy it is to renovate a co-op in NYC. I’ll settle for something in between.
We’re looking to renovate the whole thing in under $30,000 including, refinishing the floors, installing a new kitchen, upgrading electric, skim coating, painting, and buying basic stuff for us to sit and sleep on. One of the tenants in our building saw the apartment when it was on the market and said it looked like “a house of horrors”. So that’s a vibe we want to get rid of.
There’s nowhere else to go but up? Hopefully. Fingers crossed.
Oh, and why Layers and Layers of Paint? Well guess what the place was covered in when we got it? Bingo! Still is though… just nicer paint. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Got a question?
